Grand Daddy Clock
This is a six foot tall grandfather
style mechanical clock. On the
hour, the large brass bell counts
out the hour with a double hit.
The stage opens and with full
Vegas lighting, characters dance,
sing and perform.
This sculpture has an hour hand,
a minute hand and a sweep second
hand.
Two characters play poker while
a medium flea consults the spirits
on her lighted crystal ball.
A character displays precautionary
signs warning of dire consequences
if fingers come to close.
A worm gear reduction system is
employed to slow the pendulum down.
Long drive shafts coupled together
with U-joints transmit power to the
stage/bell from the bell motor
mounted below.
The pendulum bob has a grinning
face sculpted on the front.
The base holds the power supply
and bell motor. This sculpture has
two power motors and a timing motor.
In addition to the hourly show,
every five minutes the other motor
kicks on and with a cacophony of
noise slowly moves the ponderous
pendulum back and forth.
This sculpture was commissioned by
a gallery in the Forum Shops in Las Vegas.
It was immediately sold, so another was
commissioned. It too sold leading to one
more commission and of course,
one more sale.
No plans were drawn up either before
or after completion. All gears, levers
and mechanical linkages were handmade
as needed.
It was powered from the 120 VAC, 60 HZ.
