R. Bruce Salinger
Bruce, born and educated
in Southern California,
has been creating his unique
brand of kinetic, often robotic
in theme or function, sculptures
for the last forty years.
Inspired by the artists Duchamp, Tinguely, Calder,
Police and Quayle, his work has
graced the homes of the great
and near-great around the world.
Utilizing an oxy-acetylene torch
as a painter would use a brush,
Bruce welds together sheet steel,
rod and surplus metal shapes into
improbably precise but
nevertheless mechanically sound,
functioning kinetic sculptures that
force one to alternate between
laughter and sober contemplation.
Probably the
original "steam
punk", he is often
compared to Rube Goldberg, an
illustrator in the
last century who
is best known
for a series of popular
cartoons depicting
complex machines that
perform simple tasks in
complex and convoluted ways.
Bruce enjoys the independence
and freedom of the art show
circuit while maintaining a
close relationship with a few
select galleries. For the last
twenty years he has made his
home in Amador County
preferring the beauty and
open space of the Gold
Country to the congestion
of the city.
