The Early Years

   "It's Alive"!  Probably what my parents were thinking on that auspicious Sunday evening in March, 1954 when my rather oversized cranium crowned and broke through into the light.    I was told that my God given, intellectual endowment that was to become so prominent later in life was not in immediate evidence in my childhood as I spent most of my time day- dreaming.

  Significantly, however, I did receive an Erector Set for my fifth Birthday and promptly built the robot pictured on the box. Well, to be precise I bugged my poor father into constructing it...but I helped! I loved that hunk of metal but was a little disappointed that it did only two things; when it was turned ON, it moved; and when it was turned OFF, it didn't.
